Reasons and appropriate measures to circumvent cancellation of elective surgical cases: A clinical audit of a government teaching hospital

Background: Cancellation of elective surgical cases is a major unresolved problem for health care organizations worldwide and also parameter assessing the quality both patient management system. In present study, we retrospectively investigated cancellation rates reasons same in government teaching hospital suggested measures to circumvent such cancellations.Materials & Methods: Medical records 1207 patients, whose procedures were cancelled on day surgery between June 2015 May 2017, from all specialties hospital, audited. The noted.Results: Of 7316 scheduled surgeries 2017; (16.49%) surgery. highest number cancellations occurred specialty orthopaedics (6.84%) followed by general (5.41%). Both otorhinolaryngology (2.06%) gynaecology (2.07%) exhibited similar whereas facio-maxillary lowest rate (0.09%). main reason was unfit condition patients because medical [599 (49.6%)], Inadequate operation theatre time [274(22.7%)], equipment failure [207(17.2%)] not turning up [127(10.5%)].Conclusion: vary across institutions. Regular prospective or retrospective clinical audits improve services, control charts help enhancing overall picture monitoring cancellation. Most are avoidable.
